  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Christina L. Marrocco -- Detailed Historical Account, Expertly Arranged : Desperate Haven is a trove of archival information, sifted, arranged, and made sense of. This is no small feat, and in fact, it's what true historians do. Without inserting themselves into the work, they put it before the reader in ways that clarify and present the depth and realities of the ways the Poor Law played out in Dungarvan Union, during and after the famine. The text is able to trace subtle and extreme shifts in conditions and procedures and the aftermath of each change within a complex and desperate situation. As a writer, I find this work a crucial piece of research with which I may educate myself and begin to truly understand the day to day life of the people who experienced the effects of the Poor Law and of the Work House. The real people,. Fraher, O Loinsigh, and Whelen--displaying restraint that is far too lacking these days--do not weigh in to tell the reader what to think, but instead let the information speak for itself in what is both clear writing and responsible curation. And so the mind of the reader will engage with the material in a way that is meaningful and in a way that will draw them to dip back into the book after the initial read to revisit specific occurrences or time-frames. I have visited Dungarvan in person, and hope to visit again when possible, but I'd never have been able to dig through archives to unearth the information provided in this text, no matter my proximity or leisure. The expert handling of this tender and incredibly important information is a researcher's boon. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2020 )

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Historical Irish Famine information : As an Irish person living abroad, this book gives an insight into the endurance of our ancestors during the Irish Famine in Dungarvan, Abbeyside and surrounding areas in Co. Waterford. The research gives evidence from accounts depicting the costs of every penny spent under the “Poor Law” on individuals and the Workhouse supported with names of the poor misfortunate people who were starving to death, sick and homeless. A big thanks to William Fraher, William Whelan, Bernadette Sheridan,Seosaimh O Loinsigh and Waterford County Museum. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 15, 2020 )
